How to Calculate Bar Gratuity for Bar Staff
Gratuity might not be the most glamorous part of planning your wedding or private event, but it is one of the most appreciated. At Cordial Co., we believe great service deserves great recognition—and that includes making sure your bartenders feel valued at the end of the night.
So let’s break it down: how do you calculate bar gratuity fairly, clearly, and gracefully?
First, Check Your Contract
Before doing any mental math, review your bar or catering agreement. Many vendors include an automatic service charge or gratuity—typically between 15% and 20%. If that’s the case, you may not need to do anything more unless you want to add an extra token of appreciation.
If gratuity isn’t included, keep reading.
Standard Gratuity Range
For private bartending services, a typical gratuity is:
18% to 20% of the total bar bill (if alcohol is included)
$2 to $5 per guest, if the host is providing the alcohol and the bartenders are only responsible for service
$50 to $100+ per bartender, depending on event length and complexity
Remember: gratuity should reflect not just the number of hours worked, but the quality of service, prep and teardown time, and any special touches provided.
A Simple Example
Let’s say you hired two bartenders for a 5-hour reception with 150 guests, and you’re providing the alcohol. You could calculate gratuity like this:
$3 per guest x 150 guests = $450 total gratuity
Split between 2 bartenders = $225 each
Alternatively, if you want to keep it simple:
$100 per bartender = $200 total gratuity
Either approach works—the key is to plan ahead and include it in your budget.
When and How to Tip
Cash in an envelope at the end of the night is traditional and appreciated.
Digital options (Venmo, Zelle) are becoming more common, but always ask your staff in advance if that’s preferred.
If you’re working through a vendor or planner, they can handle tipping on your behalf.
Pro tip: write a quick thank-you note or card to include with the cash. It’s a small gesture that makes a big impression.
Bottom Line
Your bartenders are a key part of your guest experience—from the first welcome drink to the last espresso martini. Tipping them thoughtfully is just one more way to show appreciation for their role in making your celebration seamless and joyful.
And if you're ever unsure? We're always happy to offer guidance that fits your event, your team, and your values.
